About Us
Coryell Church Cemetery is a non-denominational and non-sectarian grave yard. Its origin dates back to early 1830's when a small group of settlers began forming a community in the area. Soon thereafter, these settlers donated land and built a school house which served, also, as a community church. In the immediate area, they started a grave yard where the earliest grave marker reads 1836 as the person's death. In 1855 settlers formed the Coryell Baptist Church and constructed a church building and an adjacent tabernacle. Coryell Baptist Church operated actively until 1982. Soon thereafter, the church building was torn down, its timbers sold, and proceeds from the sale were used to shore up the tabernacle, which stands today as an icon of the Cemetery and its parent church. An impressive and colorful history of Coryell Baptist Church is in The Light on the Prairie. Because of the association of the cemetery with this church, the name Coryell Baptist Church Cemetery was used until the church ceased to exist. Thereafter, the name became Coryell Church Cemetery. Both Coryell Church Cemetery and Coryell Baptist Church Cemetery are the same cemetery, but each has its own website: Coryell Church Cemetery and Coryell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Presently, there are 144 residents memorialized in the Cemetery, the latest in 2016. Volunteers and relatives maintain grave sites and grounds. Financial donations, private gifts and bequests, and an endowment fund support costs of the Cemetery's maintenance and upkeep. It is open for approved burials, and there are a few vacant burial sites. We invite you to look at our cemetery, take a pictorial tour, or peruse Coryell Church Cemetery Directory. Also, one can find a grave at FindaGrave.com, where Coryell Baptist Church Cemetery is the name cited.
